The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Northwest University Kano (NWU) Branch, has called on the Kano State Government and relevant authorities to urgently implement key staff allowances contained in the 2025 ASUU–Federal Government Agreement, expressing concern over what it described as an unjustifiable delay.
In a statement issued after its Congress meeting held on June 3, 2026, the union said it was disturbed by the continued non-implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and the Secretariat Assistance Allowance (SAA), despite expectations that payment would commence in January 2026.
ASUU-NWU made the appeal in a statement was jointly signed by the Branch Chairperson, Comrade Mansur Said, and the Branch Secretary, Comrade Yusuf Ahmed Gwarzo, PhD, and made available to the newsmen on Monday 8 June, 2026.
According to the union, several correspondences have been sent to the university management and the Kano State Government regarding the matter, but no significant progress has been recorded.
ASUU-NWU noted that the welfare of university staff remains critical to the stability, productivity, and growth of the higher education system, warning that delays in implementing approved entitlements place unnecessary financial hardship on workers and lead to the accumulation of avoidable arrears.
The union therefore urged the Kano State Government and all relevant stakeholders to expedite action and ensure the immediate domestication and implementation of the allowances.
“Honouring commitments made to university workers is essential for sustaining industrial harmony and promoting excellence in the higher education sector,” the statement said.
The branch also commended stakeholders who have continued to engage with the government on issues affecting staff welfare and encouraged them to intensify their efforts toward achieving a speedy resolution.
Reaffirming its commitment to dialogue and constructive engagement, ASUU-NWU expressed optimism that the necessary action would be taken without further delay in the interest of staff, students, and the wider university community.
