The Kano State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has directed the Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA) to immediately shut down all private hospitals operating without official registration.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, gave the directive on Thursday while declaring open a training workshop organised by PHIMA for private hospitals proprietors in the State.
According to the Commissioner, the decision became necessary due to the increasing challenges posed by unregistered private health facilities, particularly their failure to provide the government with essential operational data, including patient statistics and other health-related information required for effective planning and policy implementation.
Dr. Yusuf noted that, many residents so far prefer seeking medical care at private hospitals rather than government-owned facilities. However, he expressed concern that a significant number of these hospitals are operating without the required government registration.
“From this moment, I am directing PHIMA to close down every private hospital operating without valid government registration. This measure is aimed at ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, improving service delivery, and protecting the health and safety of the people of Kano State,” the Commissioner said.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the regulation of private healthcare facilities and ensuring that all health institutions operate in accordance with established laws and professional standards.
