The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), under the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme, is set to establish a 230-hectare Agro-Industrial Hub (AIH) in Bagauda town, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening value chains.
This was disclosed during a four-day meeting held at the SAPZ Programme Office, Farm Centre, Kano, as part of activities of the Joint Federal Government of Nigeria/IsDB Supervision Mission conducted from December 14 to 18, 2025.
The supervision mission focused on a detailed assessment of the SAPZ project, including a review of the implementation plan, as well as physical and financial progress recorded so far. It also sought to identify potential challenges and deliberate on the way forward for effective project delivery.
As part of the mission’s activities, discussions were held with the Transaction Advisory Firm (TAF), Design and Supervision Consultants, and Environmental and Social Safeguards (ESS) Consultants on the implementation of key consultancy services required for the project.
The team also undertook field visits to the proposed Agro-Industrial Hub (AIH) and Agro-Transformation Centres (ATCs) to assess the level of readiness and the extent of stakeholder engagement.
Speaking at the meeting, the State Project Coordinator, Aminu Iliyasu, said the Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has allocated a vast expanse of 230 hectares of land to the SAPZ programme for the establishment of the agro-processing facility.
He disclosed that the contractor handling the project has completed the design, adding that construction work is expected to commence soon. According to him, the facility will focus on key agricultural value chains, including rice, tomato, groundnut, and sesame, covering secondary processing, packaging, marketing, and export of surplus produce under the programme.
