The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who died after consuming a meal reportedly prepared by her in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on Thursday, January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m.
In a statement issued to journalists in Dutse on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the deceased took his lunch at home before suddenly falling seriously ill.
The statement said he was rushed to a hospital for medical attention, but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
”Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Police Division launched an investigation and arrested the wife of the deceased as the principal suspect, ”the statement said.
”The suspect confessed during interrogation to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She reportedly claimed that she instructed her cousin to purchase the poison used in committing the act.”
The police spokesperson added that the suspect alleged she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she said pushed her into committing the act.
It added that the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a thorough investigation.
He said upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.
The police command urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and to seek lawful means of resolving family and marital disputes.
The command warned against taking the law into one’s hands, noting that such actions often lead to irreversible consequences, and assured the public of its commitment to justice and the protection of lives and property across the state.
The suspect is currently in police custody, awaiting trial.
